Oregon State defeats UCLA for the second straight day in the best-of-three Pacific Coast Conference tournament. It's the Beavers' sixth PCC title, but this one gives Oregon State its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.March 16, 1963After opening the NCAA Tournament with wins over Seattle and San Francisco, the Beavers rout Arizona State, 83-65, in the West Regional final in Provo, Utah. With the win, OSU advances to the Final Four for the second time in school history.
Mel Counts leads the way with 26 points and 13 rebounds.February 29, 1964Amory "Slats" Gill wins the 599th and final game of his 36-year coaching career at Oregon State. When he retired, he ranked fifth among Division I coaches in victories. His teams won five Pacific Coast Conference titles, four Northern Division titles, made six NCAA appearances and made it to the Final Four twice.December 4, 1971A new era in OSU's history begins as Ralph Miller coaches his first game for the Beavers, a 69-63 win over Oklahoma State. Miller will go on to win 359 games at OSU, with four Pac-10 titles and eight NCAA appearances.
February 15, 1974Oregon State defeats No. 1 UCLA, 61-57, in Gill Coliseum. The victory ends UCLA's record 50-game Pac-8 winning streak. Paul Miller scores 16 points to lead the Beavers, while Don Smith and Doug Oxsen score 12 points apiece.January 10, 1981Oregon State was ranked No. 2 in the nation in both the AP and UPI polls. During OSU's home victory over California, the public address announcer told the crowd that No. 1 DePaul had lost, setting off a wild celebration in the crowd. The Beavers took over the No. 1 ranking for the first time in school history on Jan. 13, and remained No. 1 in at least one of the polls for a total of eight weeks. Steve Johnson, Lester Conner, Ray Blume and Mark Radford were a few of the stars on the team.February 12, 1987Oregon State makes a comeback for the ages when Bill Sherwood sinks a three-pointer from the right corner with two seconds left to win at Oregon, 64-63.
The Beavers trailed by 11 points with 3:21 to play, and were down by eight points with less than 40 seconds to go. OSU made three three-pointers in the final 38 seconds and held the Ducks scoreless in that time.February 22, 1990The best player in Oregon State history, Gary Payton scores a school-record 58 points in a 98-94 overtime win over USC. Payton shot 22-for-38 from the field, 1-for-7 on three-pointers and 13-for-16 from the foul line. He scored OSU's first eight points of the overtime period. He is named a first team All-American and Sports Illustrated's National Player of the Year at the end of the season.February 21, 2004In his second season as head coach, Jay John leads the Beavers to a 90-84 win over No. 14 Arizona. It's the program's first win over a ranked team in four years.
The win is particularly meaningful to John, who graduated from Arizona and was an assistant coach there prior to taking the OSU job. David Lucas and Chris Stephens each score 22 points.April 7, 2008Oregon State names Craig Robinson the 20th head coach in school history. Robinson spent the previous two seasons at Brown and helped lead the Bears to the postseason for the fourth time in school history. The former two-time Ivy League Player of the Year led the Bears to a school-record 19 wins in his final season.April 3, 2009Oregon State defeats UTEP, 81-73, in game three of the College Basketball Invitational championship series to give the Beavers their first postseason basketball title in school history. The victory caps a remarkable year for the Beavers as Craig Robinson leads one of the nation's best turnarounds in his first season. Oregon State won 12 more games than the previous season and the turnaround ranked No. 3 in the nation and was the fifth biggest turnaround in Pac-10 history.
